A School Garden: PS 84

Last year the principal and parents at PS 84 contacted the Landscape Design Program at Columbia. They wanted a new garden for their rooftop. The dream of a few parents and the school principal turned into an opportunity for the LD2 studio to dream up possibilities of their own. The result was nine designs and models, all well thought out and engaging.

Two students have continued to work with the school and other Columbia departments to finalize plans, estimate costs and start fundraising. Their efforts were covered by Alex Davies at TREEHUGGER. For more information on the program and the project see the CUSCE site

Cloud chasing

Friday morning was perfect. Perfect by the terms I chose to define perfect that morning. With no serious work to think about, walking the streets I found in the crisp blue winter sky a comet tail of a cloud. It was wind swept and extensive and looked like the imaginary line on a globe.

Friday morning was a perfect morning to chase a cloud down Broadway.

Our city is filled with the artistic question-response of what it means to live in this place, at this time. There is the obvious. The structures new and shiny, the parks effective and efficient, the streets timed and narrowed. And then there's the other stuff. The stuff that answers its own questions, or better yet, requests no answers.

Art Cups at the Flatiron

The street level space of the Flatiron building, its southern vertex, is being used as an art exhibit space. Fantastic!

On display are Gwyneth Leech's Art Cups and on Tuesdays and Saturdays the artist herself is there working on her Art Cups.

The whole thing is just a wonderful synergy (do people still use that word?) of art, street life, voyeurism, commerciality (this word i just made up) and public education.

Of all the things to see in San Diego, what first struck my attention were the building standpipes and street hydrants. Some sprinklers were caged, others free. There was an incredible variety of hydrants. There were also a bunch of electronic locks, usually close to the standpipes...more to come.

The Married Landscape

Civic spaces serve as the place where society, presumably, unfolds its discourse on public life. These landmarks, well designed, memorable and optimistic also serve as the wedding party's place to record a moment. Civic space becomes the backdrop to a specific day and time (even though the wedding may or may not have already happened) and the beginning of a story. These photos will live on, with people as they were then, young and hopefully in love.

The space will appear again and again in wedding photos, TV news, magazines and on the Facebook pages of tourists. Each time with a different story...

The Jaume Plensa piece, Echo is in its last week in Madison Square Park. It's quite something to see, the elongated nymph face resting bodiless on the lawn. The pure white face is both airy and heavy. As you move around the piece you see the braid in the back, which gives it a very human quality.

The Madison Square Park Conservancy has done an excellent job over the years of bringing art to the park. Art that is innovative, thought provoking and engaging.

Architectural computer modelling, drawing and rendering software, e-pads, digital cameras and all the other ways of visual representation make pencil and paper seem antiquated and in decline. My training came on the cusp of these two worlds: The laborious chore of learning perspective, color and composition and the infinite and accessible possibilities of cut, paste, undo and save as.

In both the human hand and eye commiserate to interpret what is seen and how it can be communicated to others. There's something incredibly physical and innate about sketching in the field and something mentally soothing about layering colors in Photoshop. I do and teach both.

Soon I will start a new blog dedicated exclusively to sketching in the urban environment. This blog will remain as a journal of the quotidian landscape. In the interim, some of my favorite sketching Blogs:

The East River

Yesterday we went to see birds. Not pigeons,sparrows or Bronx chickens but the birds that inhabit a handful of islands on the East River. The NYC Audubon Society guides the trip.

After a while the sight of those birds; Herons, Egrets and Gulls, made me think of what the river must have been like hundreds of years ago. A rich wetland thick with birds, fish reptiles and mammals. Noisy at night with the sound of waves and birds returning to roost. Alive with the smell of salt, rocks, soil and sand.

"For here the natural landscape is eloquent of the interplay of forces that have created it. It is spread before us like the pages of an open book...", Silent Spring, by Rachel Carson, 1962.

Ms. Carson was not referring to the natural landscape that enfolds from our efforts, but Nature's manifest. The expression of life, resilience and eternity that is present in an untouched forest as well as an abandoned parking lot.

This all came to mind after a design review whirlwind discussion on environmentalism, restoration, nature and art. Specifically, the natural beauty found in the most fractured or wounded of landscapes.

Atlantic Terminal Revisited

Last year we reviewed the Atlantic Terminal entrance-the big granite blocks at street level. At the time the design seemed out of place and off in scale. That hasn't changed.

This weekend we passed by the Terminal and found that the space between the granite blocks and the building facade was being used as a respite area by shoppers and pedestrians. The blocks, at least at that moment, were used as seating by grown ups and as "play" equipment by a group of children.

"Necessity is the mother of invention" came to mind.

What a difference a week makes

The snow melted.

Over a period of a couple of warm and cold days, absent of snowfall, the piles of gray ice have, for the most part, vanished. The stones, outcroppings and cobbles are clearly visible. The terrain's low points across lawns and paths are wet and muddy and a thin green and ochre layer of grass has emergered quietly over fields and hills.

This morning we awakened to more snow. A few inches of soft white flakes...again. It was over by 8:00 am.

Walking through the park I saw a group of kids with their sleds running to the top of a hill, anxious to slide down. This has been a remarkably active sledding season. Much more than in the past.

I wonder if these kids will see this again: this much snow; this much white; this much cold; this much free time sledding. Or will this just be a fluke. A memory recorded to be recollected later on, years from now: "Remember that winter when we sleighed all winter long"?

The Thing about melting snow...

The snowfall over the past month and a half has been huge. There was the Christmas blizzard, the end of January blizzard and sprinkles and dustings in between. It seems like the gray-black blobs of sootened ice have been around all of winter. When snow first falls it is something-soft and white with a feathery trajectory. As it accumulates, the packed layers of crystal water and air buffer all sounds, so oncoming cars and buses, steps on the the sidewalk and the conversation between people is almost silenced. Those moments are precious and last for only a short while.

Some snow has melted. In its transformation from gray pile to clear water, it reveals what was hidden. The casual urban street paraphernalia, garbage bags, cigarette butts, broken umbrellas, shoes, bottles and cans come to the surface and remind me that Man's print is at times unsightly.

The Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, designed by Jean Nouvel, was completed in 1987.

I know I went inside and remember standing on the roof and taking panoramic photos of the Seine, but the image of the 240 geometric moucharabieh on the southern facade overshadow any other memory.

Waking up to snow

Nineteen (19) inches of snow fell in Central Park two nights ago. I thought I could walk through the park on my way to work...not impossible but very difficult. The sidewalks were clear and were a better choice. The snow remained high throughout the night.

The Besthoff Garden and NOMA have a wonderfully simple and organized art collection. The pieces are recognizable (Picasso, Pollack and Miro at NOMA and Moore, Magritte, Indiana at the garden) without being terribly overwhelming (like MOMA). One can enjoy both in a day and not feel the need to take a few aspirins and rest.

The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden

On a recent trip to New Orleans we visited The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden. The 5 acre garden is adjacent to the New Orleans Museum of Art. Both are within New Orleans' 1,300 acre City Park . The Garden, was opened in November of 2003 with 50 sculptures, 41 donated by the Besthoff foundation and 9 from NOMA's permanent collection. It was constructed within a mature existing landscape of pines, magnolias and live oaks.

From the Garden Brochure:

A reconfigured lagoon bisects the site and creates two distinct halves: a mature pine and magnolia grove adjacent to the Museum, and a more open area of 200-year-old, Spanish moss-laden live oaks across the lagoon near the New Orleans Botanical Gardens. The Sculpture Garden has grown from its inception in 2003 to include 57 sculptures, most of them donated to the New Orleans Museum of Art by the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Foundation.

Natural Systems

The Hutchinson River divides Co-op City from Pelham Park. The divide is, in urbanistic terms, large but ecologically close. The sand, grass and wild rose edge sinks into the alluvial rich edge popping up as a small island then converging with the wetland edge of Pelham.

In a park some sod was removed. It was believed that the growing media, heavy and thick with silt and clay, impeded water movement into the soil profile and hindered grass establishment. Weeks later, the adjacent grass, unaware of the suggested diagnosis grew into the gap.

The Built System

It's hard to reckon that Central Park is a constructed landscape where Trees, shrubs and soil replace steel, metal and concrete.

Revisiting Acconci at Yankee Stadium

After 10 years the Acconci pieces at the 161st Street Yankee Stadium Station still look good. The idea-surfaces shifting "Push-pull" from platform to street to mezzanine-exposes the connection between the subway, the street and the elevated platform.

Phone booths: Those secluded, enclosed and transparent rooms on the street. The space you would pass, see someone talking and wonder about their conversation. Thinking about playgrounds- specifically their purpose, liabilities, risks and safety. Since parks and playgrounds are public, there is a measure of concern in keeping them safe and free of foreseeable and unforeseen hazards.

On the other side of public space is private land (the backwoods, farms and forests some of us have grown up in or been exposed to.) Places where play is an un-equatable formula mixing danger and fun, hazard and exhilaration: An action we enter at our own risk, with the knowledge and precautions instilled into us by parents and siblings, myths and science.

In that very risky domain-a place of heightened attentiveness- play is play as life is play, sweet , enjoyable and inherently risky.

Yesterday was, we think, the last weekend of Richard III at the lake around 100th Street. It's been a weekend activity, waiting on the lawn for the crowds to move from one section of the park to another as the play unfolds.

We saw the play 3 weeks ago. Since then we lay on the lawn and eat an early dinner, look up at the sky and wait...my kingdom for a horse, or better yet, my kingdom for a ray of light.

They players ask to not be filmed, so to that end video of what happens before the play - all's well that starts well - is hereforth presented for your pleasure.
